Behind the scenes
Before Trader Joe made his first appearance, Lee Falk introduced two other characters with the same name:
- In "The Impostor" a fugitive by the Trader Joe steals The Phantom's suite while he's swimming, and has the whole jungle believe he is the true Phantom.
- In "The Phantom's Ring" Trader Joe is a roughneck who manages a small shop and gets his hands on the Skull Ring for a short time, before he himself is robbed of it.
Additionally, in "The Killer" a recluse named Trader Ed appears who shares some characteristics with the Trader Joe character. Trader Ed was renamed Trader Joe in at least one translated reprint (Sy Barry - en jubileumskrönika 1961-1991 in Sweden).
