George (Evert) Olesen was an American comics artist.
Biography
Olesen began to draw while in school, and when he served as pilot during World War II he drew a daily cartoon. After World War II, Olesen studied at the Pratt Institute and majored in illustration.
In 1949 he worked on the comic book Little Beaver and in the 1950's he drew the newspaper strip "Ozark Ike" (a strip which has also been drawn by another Phantom artist, Bill Lignante). From the 1960's Olesen worked as an artist for NBC TV News, aswell as an advertising artist.
He began assisting Sy Barry as a penciller and layout artist on the Sunday strip in 1961, and on the daily strip in 1978.
He was first given official Phantom credit on a short story published as a poster in 1990. In 1991, Olesen drew two Phantom stories directly for the Fantomen comic book.
When Sy left the strip in 1994, Olesen was given official credit as penciller along with new inkers Keith Williams and Fred Fredericks. He continued to work on the Sundays until 2000 and the dailies until 2005.
He was guest of honour at a Scandinavian Chapter meeting in Copenhagen in 2004.
After his retirement he enjoyed a quiet life with his wife Rigmor.
