The Shaka tribe just barely tolerated them though and Bababu moved to Morristown as a young man, where he was recruited into the British colonial army. Rising quickly through the ranks to become a captain, becoming known for dealing swiftly and harshly with anybody who could be suspected of supporting the anti-British rebels.

As captain he was in charge when the colonial army visited the Shaka village and captain Bababu ordered to kill all cattle and burn down the crops.
