Plot synopsis
Colonel Worubu drives to a clandestine meeting with the Unknown Commander, convinced that John X led the recent invasion of Gravelines Maximum Security Prison in Rhodia, and reports on 813 political prisoners in Gravelines, including one the UC recognizes as Savarna. As Kit prepares to go and rescue her, Old man Mozz scries the 21st Phantom's adventure in "the woods that make men mad" and predicts "if you succeed in what you mean to do in Rhodia, your body lies here (pointing to the rough map he has drawn), Phantom, for all coming time!" Mozz convinces him to stop and listen to his prediction.
In Mozz's tale, The Phantom takes some flares from a trucker and uses them to stop a Rhodian armored truck, which he uses to get "inside the wire." Fighting through the guards, he reaches Savarna and asks if she has had enough revenge. "Yes," she lies. Back at the motor pool, he eschews the armored but slow truck in favor of the faster jeep. As she blasts one truck after another, the Phantom muses "Only a fool would guess at what Savanna devi might or might not do." He takes her to where he left Hero, then reveals his bullet wound. At dawn, she drives the jeep (with Hero galloping behind) to a nearby veterinarian, Dr. Fajah Kimathi.
Mozz interrupts his tale to go tell Diana and the Bandar elders, and to write it up for the Phantom Chronicles. The story continues in "The Chronicle of Old Man Mozz."
