The Zaal cult.

Dakk (also called Darcan The Eastern Dark at Janorra) was a port founded by pirates centuries ago. The 6th and the 7th Phantom drove the pirates from the sea. The Dakk Pirates

The people of Dakk then turned to their idol Zaal, which they worshipped with human sacrifice. The people of the jungle feared the Zaal worshippers that came from what they referred to as The Eastern Dark. The 9th Phantom destroyed the Zaal idol, and ended the human sacrifice. Guardian of the Eastern Dark The Eastern Dark The Eastern Dark at Janorra Instead of sacrifice, they began with slavery, and many Phantoms fought the raiders from the Eastern Dark over the years. Their slave trade was ended by the 14th The Eastern Dark The Eastern Dark at Janorra or the 15th Phantom. Raiders of the Eastern Dark

In the days of the 21st Phantom, drugs were sold to the people of the jungle which led to crime and addiction. The Phantom traced the drug dealers to The Eastern Dark, and a city named Zaal after the idol. The Phantom forced the drug dealers to burn all the drugs inside the fallen idol of Zaal. Years later, people from The Eastern Dark travelled to Asia where they tricked poor and suffering people to pay their last money for a boat trip to a paradise country. But when they arrived, the boat refugees were just dumped in the jungle. The Phantom made sure the refugees got help and brought the leaders from the Eastern Dark to trial before a world court. Next, men from The Eastern Dark were sent by the ruler Prince Darca to cut down the big trees in the land of Janorra and set up an oil rigg. The Janorra sent for the Phantom who forced the people from The Eastern Dark away from the jungle once again. The Eastern Dark at Janorra

A criminal of the Wambesi tribe went to Dakk and told Dakkian criminals of the gold hidden in his village. They joined forces and travelled to the Bangallan jungle, dressing up as old time slave raiders. The Phantom stopped them, and was thanked at the annual celebration at Phantom Head Peak in honour of the Guardian of the Eastern Dark. Raiders of the Eastern Dark

Modern Dakk is a principality where the prince is absolute ruler. It was known as a haven for criminals and terrorists, because all kinds of drug and arms trade were legal. It was also a popular tourist attraction because of its many casinos. The 21st Phantom visited Dakk and forced the current ruler, Prince Dar, to change the laws to ban the drug and weapons trade and exile all terrorists. After this, Prince Dar and his nation was viewed with respect from the world community, and remained a popular tourist attraction. The Dakk Pirates

Terrorists from Dakk then travelled to the United States and managed to smuggle in a nuclear bomb. Diana's Uncle Dave, now leading a anti-terrorist task force, learned of this and asked the Phantom for help. The Phantom traced the bomb to the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, where the terrorists threatened to set off the bomb during a performance of "Aida" unless they were given all jewelry and money from the spectators. The Phantom managed to defeat the Dakkian terrorists and disarm the bomb. Terror at the Opera

According to Team Fantomen

A few of years after the 9th Phantom had ended the Zaal worship, a mysterious man called Alib appeared to the people of Zaal. Alib made it appear that he had a plan to kill the Phantom, making the citizens build a huge idol of the Phantom at the side of the fallen image of Zaal. The idol was made of hay and other flamable material. Alib then kidnapped Kit, the Phantom's son, and left traces that pointed towards Zaal. The 9th Phantom showed up at Zaal, and found that Alib held Kit hostage at the top of the several stores high Phantom idol. He then rode up to the top at the made path, while fire arrows were fired at the idol. At the top Alib gave the Phantom his son and a clay tablet and then vanished. The Phantom idol was by now in almost full ablaze and the Phantom let his horse Storm jump off it, sometimes sliding along it until they were down. The Phantom then escaped Zaal, Alib on the other hand turned out to still be alive and never having had the intentions of killing the Phantom (yet). By now, the Phantom idol collapsed, causing an inferno to the horror of Zaal's citizens. Count of the Darkness

According to Moonstone

What appeared to be Zaal worshippers once again raided the jungle and captured people, including the Phantom, that were taken to the place of the fallen idol. Return of the Eastern Dark Pt 1 The purpose was not to actually sacrifice people to Zaal, but to harvest their organs to sell on the black market. Return of the Eastern Dark Pt 2
