Ace Comics was published by David McKay Publications from 1937 to 1949. It was a compilation of newspaper strip reprints such as "Jungle Jim", "Brick Bradford", "Tim Tyler's Luck", "Prince Valiant", "The Lone Ranger", Katzenjammer Kids" and "The Phantom".

History

"The Phantom" first appeared in issue #11 in February 1938, in brown costume. The stories were serialized from the daily strip, and were not complete in each issue. The last 4 issues in the series broke with tradition and contained stories from the Sunday strip. All of the Phantom strips printed in this series were quite heavily cropped and edited, and occasionally the text was rewritten. The daily strip from May 8, 1939 to July 12, 1941 was completely skipped for some unknown reason. The Sunday strip story "The 12 Tasks" was abbreviated to "The Seven Tasks" for the Ace Comics version in #148 and #149. The original fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth tasks were edited out of the story, leaving a total of seven.

Initially, the Phantom only ran for 4 pages in the middle of these comics, but from issue #38 the coverage was increased to 8 pages and was moved to the front.

The Phantom's first appearance on the cover of Ace Comics was on issue #140 and had a small picture of the Phantom's face in a circle about 25 mm in diameter on the cover, with the rest dominated by other King Features characters, also on covers of issues #141 and #142. The first cover entirely devoted to the Phantom was #143, and he remained there until the publication ceased with #151.

The last issue featured an advertisement for "The Blue Gang" which was supposed to appear in the next issue. However, #152 was never published and the series ended with #151.
