"The Rose of Cairo, Part 1" is a 1987 Team Fantomen story, written by Michael Tierres, with art by Hans Lindahl.

Plot synopsis

A priceless artefact, the Pandora’s Mask, is being transported from Morristown's archaeological museum to the airport for its return to the museum in USA from which it was on loan. For safety, the mask is being escorted by Lieutenant Willy Sambale and Patrolman Roger Byrnes from the Jungle Patrol. En route to the Morristown Airport, Roger Byrnes, kills Willy Sambale and escapes with the mask to Cairo where he intends to sell it to Mahmoud the Cruel. As the situation is now outside the jurisdiction of Colonel Worubu, the Phantom decides to intervene and goes to Cairo to apprehend Byrnes.

In Cairo Byrnes goes to the appointed place, Café Cairo, to meet the local belly dancer named Rose of Cairo who is the go-between for the deal. Rose of Cairo drugs Byrnes wine and starts to take unconscious Byrnes Mahmoud but Mahmoud’s lackey Ahmed gets greedy and tries to obtain the Pandora’s Mask for himself.

The Phantom manages to trace out Byrnes whereabouts with the help of a local street boy Yussuf and reaches the café and follows Ahmed. Under threat of life Byrnes reveals that the mask is at the airport and the receipt is in his belt. The Phantom intervenes but a fight breaks out and Byrnes falls to his death in the crocodile pit. During the scuffle Rose of Cairo manages to kill Ahmed and escape with the receipt.
