"The Phansom" is a parody of "The Phantom", originally published by EC Comics in Panic #6 (1955).

History

"The Phansom" was drawn by Will Elder under the signature "Bill Elder and Willie McElder"; an obvious pun on Lee Falk and Wilson McCoy who was the creative team of "The Phantom" at the time. The script was written by Albert B. Feldstein and Nick Meglin, who were both uncredited in the original publishing. Al Feldstein has been credited in later reprints, and upon Nick Meglin's passing his contribution to the Phansom was highlighted in a Facebook post by filmmaker Gary VandenBergh who interviewed Meglin for a documentary about Bill Elder: "Nick was over the moon when the first story he wrote for PANIC would be illustrated by one of his MAD heroes, Bill Elder. He couldn’t believe how excited Willie was to do the story, PHANSOM. Nick was blown away when Will came to him at the EC offices to excitedly share & get Nick’s take on Will’s vision for the splash page."

Plot summary

The Phansom's love interest Dinah Potrzebie is once again kidnapped. This time, the Phansom is unable to help her, as he is stuck under the title logo. Dinah retells the origin of the Phansom, while she waits for the Phansom to rescue her once again. When the Phansom finally comes to her aid, we also learn why he has never proposed to Dinah: the current Phansom is actually female!
