The Skull Fleet was a fleet of ships founded in the 1620s by the 3rd Phantom to attack Corsairs in the Mediterranean Sea in search of his son Chris.
The fleet flew a black flag with the Phantom's sign of the skull. After Chris was found and rescued, the fleet continued operations for several years under the command of Hendrik Welde, the first slave that the 3rd Phantom freed in his search for Chris. But after the death of Welde, the Skull Fleet became an outright pirate organization and with added crossbones the flag became the pirate symbol that is famous even today.
