Plot synopsis
In Old man Mozz's prediction, Kit muses about his father retiring. He goes to the local tea room, where his girlfriend Manju works, then Savarna walks in. Then Jampa arrives, but as he is about to leave, Savarna calls him out and reminds him of the mark she left on him 19 years earlier after he murdered her family, stole their ship (the India Voyager II), and left her to die in the water.
Later, still in Mozz's prediction, teacher Kyabje Dorje fetches Kit and warns of "soldiers from the north" coming to kill them. Dressed as peasants, they meet and defeat four assassins. A week later, a fleet of bombers attack Nyamjang Chu Monastery and kill Kyabje Dorje. Mozz tells the Phantom that his son becomes a legend, a guerrilla commander known as “The African,” avenging the lost mountain city. When the Phantom suggests that Heloise, in her brother's absence, could be the 22nd Phantom, Mozz says she chooses not to, becoming instead a suburban American housewife. Diana takes a permanent United Nations job in New York City.
Back in Bangalla, the Phantom tells Diana about his intent to rescue Savarna from Gravelines, and she encourages him to do so. The story continues in "Phantom's End."
