"The Slaves" is a 1983 Bastei story, written by Peter Mennigen, with art by José María Ortiz Tafalla. It was intended for Phantom #242, but the series ended with #238 and the finished story was never published in its original form.
The artwork and script were later found, and it was retooled into an 18 page text story by Peter Mennigen and published in 2020 by the fan magazine Bastei Freunde. Two pages of the comic version were also published in the same issue.
In 2022, the story was completely finished as a comic book story of 14 pages and published in the first issue of the Phantom (Wick) series.
