Plot synopsis

Chris, the future 6th Phantom has been studying in The Netherlands and Italy (Firenze) for a few years and is travelling back to Bengali to be reunited with his parents.

Travelling on the Dutch ship Radelband, he is forced to stay for a while at Fort Nassau on the Dutch Gold Coast after a storm damages the ship. He meets a slave who has a tattoo with The Phantom's protection. The slave belongs to the Swedish Africa Company and the Swedish lieutenant Crona refuses to sell the slave to Chris. When Chris pulls his flintlock pistol, the lieutenant shoots Chris in his knee.

A few days later Chris meets with the Swedish commander to ask to buy the slave but is told that lieutenant Crona and the slaves have already left for the Portuguese colony of Sao Tomé. Chris and his friend Hendrik travel to Sao Tomé but when he arrives there he is eventually arrested as a Dutch spy, with false evidence planted by lieuteanant Crona.

When the Dutch ship arrives to Morristown without Chris, his father the 5th Phantom travels to Sao Tomé with two Bandars. Chris is sentenced to hanging but his father can present convincing proof that the charges are false. Chris proposes to lieutenant Crona's fiance Clarinda, who asks him to come back when he is older than 12 years.
