"The Return of General Bababu" is the 142nd Phantom daily story. The story was written by Lee Falk and drawn by Sy Barry.

Plot synopsis

President Lamanda Luaga is a friend of the Phantom and Diana. He sends a message to the skull cave, asking if the baby has arrived and if he can come for a visit. The Phantom call him and tell him that they have had twins, a boy and a girl. Luaga is excited and asks if he can come for a visit on Friday.

General Bababu, pardoned by the president for his planned coup is in Paris planning a new coup. In the presidential palace, the president's pilot is struck down and replaced with major Crotta. The president is taken by helicopter to The Misty Mountains and the kingdom of prince Agorda where he is received by general Bababu.

In the skull cave, the Phantom and the others wait hour after hour for the president to arrive. The Phantom contact the Jungle Patrol and learn that the president's pilot has disappeared. After searching he finds the kidnapped pilot and learn that general Bababu has returned to Bengali. The general want president Luaga to resign in a televised address and hand the presidential power over to the general. When the president refuses the general believe that a good whipping will make the president change his mind.

When the Phantom arrive to prince Agorda's castle he knock down the guards one by one. He frees the president, then find general Bababu for a final showdown. Prince Agorda order his men to arrest the Phantom, but the guards are Wambesi and greet the Phantom friendly. The general is taken by helicopter to Bengali for trial but not before stopping in the Deep Woods so that president Luaga can meet Kit and Heloise for the first time.

Behind the scenes

  • The 8th Phantom and Heloise of Hanta are said to have married in April, 1685 and April, 1675.
  • Continuity error in the strips of January 2 and January 3: When the Phantom finds president Luaga his hands are tied. In the next panel his hands are untied, then in the next the Phantom is untying his hands.
  • In this story, the countries of The Misty Mountains appear to be a part of Bangalla, as Prince Agorda complains about President Luaga's taxes.
  • Diana does not recognize General Bababu, despite being shown with him in a flashback scene earlier in the story.
  • This story foreshadows President Luaga's relationship with Miss Tagama. When Rex says "You should start your own family, Mr. President", Luaga looks at Tagama and answers "Maybe I will, Rex. But it takes two."
