Plot summary
Kit and Heloise wish to stay on vacation in The Deep Woods instead of going back to their school Durham House. The Phantom tell them a story to teach them the value of studying hard.
Chris, the son of the 12th Phantom arrives with his father to Dragonsmoor Academy, his new school. He shares a room with Aleister, the son of a shipper who says that he only studies enough not to be thrown out of school, and Lucius Thatcher, a thin boy who spends most of his time with his books. Chris asks his science teacher professor Zoth if he can study extra with him after school but the professor says he already has a apprentice, but does not say who.
At night Chris sneaks into professor Zoth's laboratory and discover that the professor is an alchemist. He is knocked down from behind and when he wakes up he learns that it is in fact the lazy Aleister who is the secret apprentice and that Aleister and the professor will use Chris' blood in an experiment a few days later. Until then he is locked up.
Principal Niven is alarmed by Chris' disappearance and write a letter to his father. The 12th Phantom arrive to school on a dark and stormy night when Aleister and professor Zoth intend to use Chris' blood to find the philosopher's stone and there is an ultimate showdown between the crazy Aleister and The Phantom in the thunderstorm and lightning.
