Moonstone Books is an American comic book, graphic novel, and prose fiction publisher based in Chicago, Illinois. From 2002 to 2010, they were the main publisher of Phantom comics in the US.

History

Moonstone Books was launched by Joe Gentile in 1995. Originally only publishing creator-owned comics, Moonstone began publishing comics based upon licensed properties in 2001.

Phantom publications

In 2002 Moonstone began publishing Phantom stories. From 2002 to 2004 they released five graphic novels, all with cover art by Joel Naprstek.

The success of the Phantom graphic novels spawned the debut of an on-going Phantom series in 2003. During the first years Ben Raab served as head writer, but was succeeded by Mike Bullock in 2006. In addition several other authors made guest appearances. Since 2007 Silvestre Szilagyi was the main artist.

Doug Klauba was the sole cover artist until 2006 when he painted his last cover, and was succeeded by a variety of different artists.

In addition Moonstone has released the graphic novel Legacy, a very ambitious project which re-tells of the origin of the Phantom line, by means to look like the pages of the first Phantom's chronicle book, as well as two "wide vision" graphic novels, and two prose anthologies - The Phantom Chronicles.

Other titles

Other Moonstone titles besides The Phantom include Kolchak: the Night Stalker and Buckaroo Banzai as well as Vampire the Masquerade, Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood. In addition, Moonstone has revived several other classic characters, such as Zorro, Frankenstein's monster, The Avenger, Doc Savage, Captain Action, Cisco Kid and Airboy, as well as created lineups featuring historical characters such as Cleopatra, Belle Starr and Genghis Khan.

In 2009 they published a few stories featuring Lee Falk's other hero, Mandrake the Magician.
