Plot summary

In Venice in February 1773, the ambassador of the Dutch Republic is murdered. A few weeks later Chris, the future 12th Phantom, is walking in Venice when he meets Amine van der Lööwe, daughter of the new Dutch ambassador, during an incident. He falls in love with her and, to her great irritation, starts to write love letters to her. Finally, he follows her during a party and becomes the witness of how Amine's father, ambassador Van der Lööwe, stabs his grandfather, Claudio di Mascarelli, to death. He is then knocked out by Amine and framed for the murder.
When Chris' father, the 11th Phantom, receives word that his son has received the death sentence, he rides to Venice and frees Chris from prison, escaping in an air balloon. While Chris hides outside Venice, The Phantom breaks into van der Lööwe's study and finds evidence that van der Lööwe is murdering selected members of the republic's council who wish to form an alliance between Venice and the Austrian-Spanish House of Habsburg.
