Behind the scenes
- This story came to be because of a mistake. Özcan Eralp had been given the assignment to remake the Falk & McCoy story "Fathers and Sons". The original American version of this was supposed to be mailed by the Fantomen editorial staff in Sweden to Eralp, who lived in Turkey at that time. Eralp got in touch later to say he hadn't received anything, and the Fantomen staff mailed the story to him, assuming that the first package had been lost in the mail. A while later, Bertil Wilhelmsson contacted the Fantomen editorial staff to inform that he had done five pages of the "Fathers and Sons" remake and asked for an advance on the fee. In other words; the first package had been sent to the wrong artist, and now two artists were both working on a remake of the same story. It was decided that Janne Lundström would write a new script for Wilhelmsson, that continues after the first five pages that he had already drawn. This became "The Skull-Marked", while Eralp's version became "The Gold of Destiny".
- The credits on the first page of the story are: synopsis by Janne Lundström, script and art by Bertil Wilhelmsson.
