Plot summary

After a world trip, chess grand-master Alexei Markov's ship stops in Morristown port, on his way back home. Phantom is a great admirer of Markov and travels to the port to meet him so that he can play a round of chess with him. But phantom is not allowed to meet with Markov. While phantom is still in the port, he sees a man jump out of Markov's ship. The man turns out to be Markov himself. He seeks political asylum in Bengali. But Markov's escape has already been noticed and the Russian security personnel Colonel Krasjunov and his men are after him. Phantom manages to dodge them and takes Markov to the nearest police station. He then goes to the presidential palace to ask Luaga to grant Markov political asylum. But Luaga is negotiating an important treaty between Bengali and Russia and does not want to jeopardize that by giving political asylum to Markov. Phantom returns to the police station, only to find that Colonel Krasjunov and his men managed to snatch Markov from the police station. When phantom reaches the port, they are already on-board the ship and it had left the port. Phantom determined to help Markov, convinces Luaga to make him a part of the official Bengali delegation, that is supposed to leave for Russia, in a weeks time, to discuss about the treaty. The adventure continues in Russia about how Phantom manages to get Markov and his wife Nadja out of the country without jeopardizing the treaty.
