The Heart of Darkness
The Heart of Darkness is a 390 pages long Team Fantomen series written by Claes Reimerthi and drawn by Joan Boix. The story features the Phantom facing several supernatural elements, and ran as a backup story in Fantomen from 1994 to 1996, under the header Fantomenlegender (Phantom Legends). During this run it comprised 49 episodes, each being 7-12 pages long. A 50th and final 38-page supplement episode was published in 2009.
In 2022 all stories where gathered in one hardcover volume, Mörkrets hjärta.
Concept
The story stars the 21st Phantom, as well as his ancestors, fighting the Brotherhood, a centuries old organization with connections to the Nazis, struggling to gain world control. The big villain of the series, besides the Brotherhood, is Userhat, an assassin originating from the lost island of Atlantis, who gained immortality after being possessed by the demon Bahamot. Assisting the Phantom is his wife Diana, as well as Dov Herzl, an elderly Jew and former prisoner of the Nazi concentration camp, who once saved the life of the 20th Phantom.
"The Heart of Darkness" also follows up on the events from the 1985 Team Fantomen story "The Fire of Life", with several characters from that story reappearing.
