Charlemagne was the Holy Roman Emperor in the 9th century who united much of western and central Europe during the Early Middle Ages.

Biography within Phantom comics

After Seven Years’ War, Emperor Charlemagne had conquered most of Spain except Saragoza which was held by Saracens. The Horn of RolandIn the year 778 Charlemagne led his army against the Caliph of Cordova and then made his way back over the Pyrenees with Roland bringing up the rear-guard. Roland and his 20 thousand men were betrayed and attacked by 400 thousand Saracens. To keep the emperor safe he decided to take a stand at the Roncevalles pass and fought till only 60 men remained and blew his oliphant horn to summon Charlemagne only when his friend Oliver also died. When Charlemagne reached the battlefield he found that the only survivor was Count Henri de Cambrai. In appreciation of Henry’s apparent bravery, Charlemagne presented Roland’s legendary sword Durandal to him. The Legend of the Swords, Part 2: Durandal
