In the year 2040, environmental disasters and the economic Resource Wars of the early 21st century have decimated the fragile ecological balance of an Earth once teeming with life. Everywhere, the privileged and wealthy continue to thrive in expensive real estate developments that tower above the suffering masses. The victims of Earth’s misfortune have been forced to subsist on scavenged refuse from the past on the mangled streets of forlorn city-states.

In Metropia (once known as New York City), the largest and most powerful of the city-states, the powerful robotics manufacturing corporation Maximum Inc. has slowly shaped a cold, steely urban center, consisting of huge, residential towers intertwined with TubeTrain tunnels. Maximum's robotic "biots" ('''Bi'''ological '''O'''ptical '''T'''ransputer '''S'''ystem) have replaced enormous amounts of human labour, and the corporation is illegally producing prohibited combat biots to form Maximum's personal underground army. Maximum has plans to construct the fortress of Cyberville, an immense survival shelter where only the wealthiest and most elite humans will retreat once Earth finally succumbs to its slowly deteriorating state and Maximum's biot armies take control of Metropia.

The only hope for the survival of humanity is the Ghost Jungle — thousands of square miles of mutated vegetation that may be the planet's salvation. This secret source of life is submerged beneath Metropia where no one is aware of it, but fortunately, college student Kit Walker Jr. is chosen by fate to save the world, donning the black mask and purple suit of his people’s savior, the 24th Phantom.

The role of the Phantom has been passed on from father to son since the 1500s, leading the world to believe that the Phantom is a single immortal individual. Phantom 2040, unlike the Ghost Who Walks previous animated outing ''Defenders of the Earth'', is
well liked by many Phans. Debuting in 1994 the series received rave reviews from critics and
audience member alike. It was praised for its intelligent stories and character development, hight
quality animation (especially in action scenes) and subtle teaching of such values as individuality,
freedom and the volatility of humanity.

The series was something of a large departure from Lee Falk's original comics. As with ''DotE'' this was a sci-fi series, not a pure jungle adventure show. However, with the Ghost Jungle, an element of the character's jungle origins was kept. The character designs for the series were the work of Peter Chung, creator of the cult hit anime series ''Æon Flux''. While some Phans liked this stylized design others felt that the
characters, especially that of the Phantom were "too skinny."

His mother, [[Maude Thorne McPatrick]], came from Wisconsin in the United States, he came to study in Missisippi when he was twelve years old, living with his aunt Lucy and uncle Jasper in the town of Clarksville.

Here he met his wife-to-be, [[Diana Palmer]]. Kit was an extremely talented sportsman, and was predicted to become the world champion of many different events (even knocking out the world heavyweight boxing champion in a sparring match when the champion visited Clarksville). Despite being able to choose practically any career he wanted, Kit faithfully returned to Bangalla to take over the role of the Phantom when he received word that his father was dying from a knife-wound.

One of Kit's first missions as the Phantom was to find his father's killer, [[Rama Singh]], who had betrayed and murdered [[the 20th Phantom]] by stabbing him in the back, stealing his special gunbelt in the process. The Phantom eventually found him and reclaimed the belt at the island of [[Gullique]], but before he could avenge his father and bring Rama to jail, Rama managed to blow up his lair, killing himself and his henchmen in the process.

====Numbering====
According to present day production, the current Phantom is the 21st of the line. The first stories to state this was produced in the early 1950's, with "[[The Mysterious Passenger (Sunday story)|The Mysterious Passenger]]" as one early example. However, other stories (e.g. "[[The Adventures of Lucy Cary]]") kept referring to the present Phantom as the 20th for more than 20 years.

When [[Ulf Granberg]] began preparations for a bigger Scandinavian based production, one of the first actions was to prepare a table for the births and deaths of the Phantoms. Initially, [[Team Fantomen]] regarded the current Phantom to be the 20th, but in the mid-70's Lee Falk finally stated that the current Phantom is the 21st, and the Scandinavian production decided to follow this.

Other producers of Phantom stories generally have accepted the current Phantom being the 21st, with the notable exception of the [[Bastei stories]], where he is considered [[the 15th Phantom|the 15th]].

It is also known that her maternal grandfather is [[H. H. Palmer]] and that she has an aunt, [[Elsie Palmer|Elsie]], who is her mother's only sister and the one in the family who is rich, Diana being her favorite.

She has several cousins ([[Don Palmer]], [[Lisa Wright]], [[Ann Leslie]], [[Marie Laurant]], [[Beth]] and [[Bob]]), but no siblings.

Diana first met Kit Walker in Clarksville, USA, when they were both children. Kit, having recently arrived to live in the US together with his faithful friend [[Guran]] of the [[Bandar]] tribe, had run away from his aunt and uncle, Sid and Bessie, due to strong homesickness. Diana, only eight years old at the time, convinced the ten year old Kit to stay together with his aunt and uncle.

Some time later, Kit rescued Diana from a panther, which had recently escaped from the local zoo, and was now running freely around in Clarksville. Kit, with his years of jungle training, shot the animal dead with a bow and arrows he had taken from his sports-teacher.

After the dramatic events with the panther, the two did not see each other for years, before they were unexpectedly reunited at a Christmas party several years later, both around the age of eighteen to twenty. Kit was already a celebrated sportsman in almost every field, and Diana had broken records for her diving.

Kit and Diana fell in love with each other that Christmas holiday, the relationship going as far as Kit considering proposing to her.

However, his plans were interrupted by Guran, who came back to USA from [[Bangalla]] to tell Kit that his father was dying after being stabbed in the back by [[Rama Singh]], leaving Kit with no other choice than leaving Diana and travelling back to his homeland to take over the mantle of the Phantom.

After a short career as a nurse, Diana is today working in the UN. She also has an Olympic medal in diving and a black belt in karate.

Diana was portrayed by Jeanne Bates in the [[The Phantom (1943 movie serial)|1943 Phantom movie serial]]. However, in the serial, she is the niece of Professor Davidson, and she is not romantically involved with the Phantom, but is intending to marry a man named Byron in the beginning of the story.

In 1996, Kristy Swanson portrayed her in Paramount's film "[[The Phantom (1996 film)|The Phantom]]", featuring Billy Zane as The Phantom. Diana is here sent out by her uncle Dave, in the film a wealthy newspaper publisher, to Bangalla to help with the search of a fabled weapon of doom, the Skulls of [[Touganda]]. When she is trapped by the henchmen of bad guy Xander Drax, she is saved by the Phantom, who unbeknownst to her is really her college boyfriend, Kit Walker. Towards the end of the film (according to [[The Phantom (1996 film)|the novelization]]) she works out the Phantom's true identity based on the fact that he appeared just after Kit disappeared - which makes her smarter than most superheroes' girlfriends.

== Co-Produced Newspapers ==
I have recently come across a couple of examples of co-produced newspapers. In some cases, there are simply different editions of the same newspaper, but with different titles. Sometimes, There are to separate newspapers that are joined together, with diferent editions, eventually becoming only one edition. See [[LV.]], [[LK.]], [[VP.]], [[Folkbladet]], and [[Östgöten]] which illustrates two examples of this.

HOW are we to make articles about this? Separate for the different editions (as I have done)? Separate articles for the different newspapers, even for the part of the publication of [[dailies]] after they have become one newspaper?

== Fantomen covers ==
How should a cover be named? I have always thought that Fantomen covers were to be be named "Fantomen etc.." even if it was first published in Norway or any of the other countries which ''Fantomen'' was co-produced with because the main work was done in Sweden. Now we have the case of [[Fantomet 9/2015]] which was published August 20, while [[Fantomen 20/2015]] was published September 24. Thus we have the article [[Fantomet 9/2015 cover]]. :The [[Fantomet 9/2015 cover]] is an exception, it was produced for the edition in Norway without any plans for use in Sweden (as told by the artist in a Facebook post). An opportunity to use it in Sweden came already the same year, but it could also have been put on hold for years or never used at all. Other covers are produced for the Swedish edition, but sometimes appear in other countries some days/weeks before due to practical reasons. ==Merchandise Parent Category==
I've noticed that it can be hard to find listings on merchandise unless you know exactly what you're looking for. Unlike, say, 'comics,' it can be hard to look up merchandise a some people might put something in as a toy, while another might list it as an action figure. I was thinking that if we had a parent merchandise category that all others could go under it would make finding those articles much easier. ==Suggestion of New article about the Palmer family==
I haven't been writing anything in this wiki for years, but now I would propose that we create an article for the Palmer family. This in order to get an overview of its members and how they are related. Diana's grandfather, [[H. H. Palmer]], for instance claims that Diana is his only grandchild. Elsie, sister of Lily and Dave, appears to not have a husband at the time when she meets the Phantom (had she have been younger, she would have want to marry the Phantom). But Diana has several cousins that shows up every now and then. It could be that "cousin" is used in a more general sense (i.e. also for second cousins, etc), but it should be in an article to be pointed out. I remember that in "Fantomen Talar" there was once a discussion by the editor of how Diana's family looked like.

== Plot Summary ==
The story begins with [[Lee Falk]] narrating the origin of the Phantom.

The twins are living a happy life in the [[Deep Woods]], but they know that they soon will have to leave in order to attend school abroad.

The Phantom picks up the subject after lunch one day. Since they are both nearly 15, it is time to send them away. Diana thinks that New York is perfect for Heloise and she will see Diana whenever she is working there.
Kit, on the other hand, wants to go to California or Hawaii. As the Phantom imagines that Kit would major in surfing in those places, he suggests a school mentioned in the chronicles.

The Phantom mentions that there is a school deep in the Himalayas where two of their ancestors went to school.
In 1754, the future 11th Phantom journeyed to the school from the Deep Woods when he was 16. The world opened up to him there and when he left, his tutor, Kyabje Kunjen, told him that he would return within 100 years and gave him words of identification to say when he returned.
In 1846, the future 16th Phantom came there at age 15 (same age as Kit) and was taught by Kyabje Lobsang who made him one of the greatest Phantoms of their line.

At this point in the story, Heloise tips Kit off of where it is heading and Kit asks a bit upset if he is to go to the Himalayas and pretend that he was there in 1746 and 1854. The Phantom replies that he of course would not, but claim to have been there in 1754 and 1846. If he goes.

Kit is not so excited about going to the Himalayas, while Heloise is jealous that she cannot be the Phantom. In the end, after consulting [[Guran]], Heloise and Diana goes to New York where Heloise decides to try the girls-only Briarson School feeling really excited about it, while Kit starts plowing through the chronicles about the 11th and 16th Phantoms' exploit. The realization that the 11th Phantom still had not sworne the Oath at the time, but actually was his own age gives Kit's interest in the whole thing a real boost and he memorizes every detail, practically living in the Chronicle Room.

While in New York, Heloise meets and befriends Mary Worth, getting her number.

When Diana and Heloise returns, Diana is worried that Kit might actually go to the Himalayas. The Phantom then explains to the family that he did not go when he got the offer, citing homesickness as the reason, but also, looking back, realizes that the offer made him feel not so far away from home. Thanks to not going, he also got to develop the romance with Diana.

The Phantom then goes off to Mawitaan to fight crime, while Diana and Heloise plans the birthday. When the Phantom returns, the guests have already started to arrive.

Among the guests is Mandrake the Magician, during the party he presents Kit and Heloise with two brand new cars, although when Kit try one, it turns out to be an illusion.

After the party, Kit announces that he plan to go to the Himalayas. Heloise reluctantly supports him.

I am a little uncertain on whether it perhaps would be better to split this article in two, one for Kit and one for Heloise, though the problem is that Kit has the same name as his father ,and forefathers, and it is therefore hard to distinguish between them. == Plot Summary ==
The story picks up from the previous story. After The Phantom came back from Baronkhan, Diana is afraid of let Kit go away to the Himalayas, where they won't have any kind of contact for years with him. But the Phantom believes the twins are ready to make by themselves their lives, Kit was born to be the next Phantom.

But while Diana cries while she thinks about how his boy will be years far away from her. The Phantom also can't sleep, because he is worried for Heloise. He remembers he heard the name "Briarson School" somewhere before even Heloise say it to him and then realizes that he read the name in the files from the Hard Drive of "Eric Sahara".

The Phantom reminds Guran, that in that hard drive was the Nomad family files and also enough files to take down the Nomad and his empire of crime. Guran then elaborates, Heloise Walker would be the classmate of Kadia Sahara, the daughter of the Nomad. The Phantom jokes about the matter believing this would be a good time to take Eric Sahara down.

But Guran sees this like a serious matter, one Diana should know about, but Diana is finally accepting their kids are growing up and exciting days are coming for them. So the Phantom decides not to tell Diana the truth because, after all, Kadia Sahara isn't a terrorist, her father is. Briarson is also a big school, they could actually not ever meet.

What Kit doesn't know, is that meanwhile in Briarson School, The Headmistress decides to put her two first African students together, Kadia and Heloise.

[[Paul Ryan]], the previous artist of the daily strip, passed away suddenly on March 7, 2016. He had recently finished a new Phantom story for [[Team Fantomen]], and had only one week of strips left of what became his final daily strip story, "[[The Baronkhan Sedition]]". Manley was then brought in to finish the story.
