Plot summary

An acquaintance of the 11th Phantom, Maria Löwitz, is a lady-in-waiting at the Russian court in St Petersburg. She disappears after overhearing a conversation between Grand Duke Paul and the Count of St. Germain. After her disappearance, a previously prepared letter is sent to Bengali where it is received by the 12th Phantom. He travels to St Petersburg where he arrives at the end of 1784 and gets to meet Catherine the Great. Also in St Petersburg is the Phantom's enemy Phoenix, appearing as the French nobleman Count of St. Germain, searching for a secret library.
