Plot Summary
In this story, the Phantom is informed by some forest dwellers that the Python is up to no good in their remote region.
Upon investigating, he finds that Chatu has been collecting bats and planning to use them to unleash an ebola plague.
Very quickly, the Phantom puts an end to Chatu's plan; but, then, complications set in.
The possibility emerges that the Phantom may have contracted ebola, as Chatu has done already. Guran comes to the rescue with a dose of medicine for his friend, but the Phantom insists on giving it to Chatu, instead of taking it himself.
Guran strongly argues against this course of action, but the Phantom goes ahead. After a few days, it appears that Chatu will recover from his self-inflicted illness and that the Phantom never had it. Having saved Chatu's life, the Phantom then takes him off to Boomsby Prison.
We learn from this story that the Phantom will follow his own moral code, even if it runs against his own interests and those of the society he protects. This fatal flaw in his judgement will lead to tragic consequences when Chatu is ready to repay his benefactor with murderous revenge.

Notes
- A flashback refers to daily story 217 "The Python of Bangalla" as "The Return of Chatu." The original story (217) says that Devil and Hero took the wounded Phantom "to Dr. Cartwright's," but the flashback identifies their destination as "Dr. Axel's hospital."
