Behind the scenes

  • This story has often been reprinted with the title "The Carlyle's Good Mark". However, the actual title "The Two Signs" appears in the second daily strip of this story. Although it could also be argued that this only refers to the events of the following strip, which mentions the Phantom's Skull Mark and introduces the Good Mark which becomes the focus of the story after that.
  • The present day part of the story explicitly takes place in 1958, and the historical part in 1856 (with a chronicle entry from August 12 that year). There is also a brief reference to events taking place 50 years earlier.
  • Connie Carlyle is one of several characters named Connie, named after Lee Falk's second wife Constance.
