Although the strip had been called "Fantomen" (a direct translation of "The Phantom") in Vecko-Revyn, it was renamed "Dragos" in Svenska Dagbladet. The reasons for this are still unclear and disputed. The name "Dragos" was after that used in all Swedish (and some Finnish newspapers who published the Phantom daily strip, while "Fantomen" was used as the title in Vecko-Revyn, the Fantomen Christmas Album and the Fantomen comic book.

Over the years, most Swedish newspapers dropped the name "Dragos" and retitled it "Fantomen". Svenska Dagbladet changed the name in 1980. The name change was noted on the front page of Svenska Dagbladet.

Svenska Dagbladet is a Swedish newspaper that publishes "The Phantom" daily strip.

History

Svenska Dagbladet June 8, 2012 Culture section.

Starting June 8, 1942, Svenska Dagbladet became the first newspaper in Sweden to publish the Phantom strip on a daily basis. Before that, it had been published weekly in Vecko-Revyn since 1940.

Although the strip had been called "Fantomen" (a direct translation of "The Phantom") in Vecko-Revyn, it was renamed "Dragos" in Svenska Dagbladet. The reasons for this are still unclear and disputed. The name "Dragos" was after that used in all Swedish (and some Finnish newspapers who published the Phantom daily strip), while "Fantomen" was used as the title in Vecko-Revyn, the Fantomen Christmas Album and the Fantomen comic book.

Over the years, most Swedish newspapers dropped the name "Dragos" and retitled it "Fantomen". Svenska Dagbladet changed the name in 1980. The name change was noted on the front page of Svenska Dagbladet.[1]

For a while, each comic strip in Svenska Dagbladet was published only five days a week on a rotating schedule. Since January 2010, the Phantom strip is published seven days a week.

On June 8, 2012, Svenska Dagbladet celebrated the 70th anniversary of publishing the Phantom strip. The Culture section had the Phantom on the front page, and it included a four-page anniversary article about the Phantom.
