Le Fantôme (Remparts)
Le Fantôme was a French comic book dedicated to the Phantom published by Editions des Remparts from January 1963 to August 1980.
History
Le Fantôme (subtitle Aventures américaines) was the first regular Phantom publication of Editions des Remparts. It was based on the Italian publisher Fratelli Spada's L'Uomo Mascherato series.
This series enabled young people of the sixties and the seventies to discover the comic created by Lee Falk previously known by theirs parents through only a few newspapers or/and comics books published before and after the Second World War. It also gave comic collectors access to almost all the American stories at a time when a great part of them had never been published in France.
It was originally released monthly but later twice a month and finally weekly. However, at the end of the series the number of issues was reduced.
The format also changed over the years. Initially it was 15 cm × 21 cm and 36 pages, later 13 cm × 19.5 cm and 68 pages from #358 and finally 19 cm × 26 cm and 52 pages from #455 to the last issue. In Italy this was because the series was restarted with new numbering, but in France the numbering remained the same.
The Phantom stories were supplemented by American comics such as "Tim Tyler's Luck", "Rip Kirby" and "Ben Bolt", and Italian comics.
From #387 to #446 (60 issues), a second numbering was used with the change to a larger size. Those 60 issues also contained a 8 page supplement in each issue, with a format of 38 cm x 50cm - reproducing the 468 Sunday pages published between May 28 1939 ("The League of Lost Men") and May 16 1948 (end of "The Marshall Sisters"). Those supplements were later collected in 4 albums entitled L'âge d'or (The Golden Age). When the concept of large supplements was abandoned, the chronological reprints of Sunday stories was still temporarily maintained in the form of ordinary sized complete stories in the magazine issues #450 to #460.
A total of 482 issues were published from 1963 to 1980. Unsold copies were later glued together with a new outer cover and sold as "albums". A total of 55 albums were published.
