Hrvatski dnevnik was a Yugoslavian newspaper that published "The Phantom" daily and Sunday strip from 1936 to 1941 seven days a week, and then reprinted first four daily stories in comic book series "Fantom" in 1937 and 1938. It was the first Phantom publication ever in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

History

Hrvatski dnevnik was a daily newspaper published in Zagreb. It started in May 1936 and canceled in April 1941.

The newspaper was published in Croatian language. Daily strips sometimes have been edited and reduced to three panels unlike four in original version, and then in some period strips published in Hrvatski dnevnik were combined from panels of two original strips. It means that many strips were published over two days. For example, on April 24, 1939 the last panel of the last strip from the story "The Shark's Nest" was published and the first two panels of the first original strip from the next story "Fishers of Pearls". It's interesting that translator was famous Yugoslavian / Croatian poet Ivan Goran Kovačić.

The last issue was published on April 14, 1941, but didn't contain any Phantom strip. Newspaper was banned by government of Independent State of Croatia.

Notes

  • "The Singh Brotherhood" was published completely, but readers could never read some strips. For political reasons, without any connection with published comic strips, some issues were censored and banned. Those issues from the following dates were saved in National and University Library in Zagreb: November 27 and 28, 1936, and December 7-9, 14-21, and 28, 1936.
  • "Adventure in Algiers" has the title of the previous story "Fantom u Indiji (Tajna maloga Tome razjašnjena)" until November 16, 1938.
  • "The Shark's Nest" has the title of the previous story "Fantom i Diana" until January 6, 1939.

  • "The Golden Circle" has title "Fantomov suparnik" until April 8, 1940 (the first three weeks of the story), and on April 9, 1940 title changed to "Fantom u borbi s družbom od “Kruga sa strjelicom”".
  • "The Sea Horse" was parted in three, because existed problems with transporting of material from the USA. On November 1 and 2, 1940 readers were informed that publishing of this story was temporarily stopped after the ship who was transporting new strips was sunk somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. On January 6, 1941 in intro text were given some reminiscences about previous events from this story. On January 18, 1941 readers were informed that publishing of the Phantom strips will be continued for a few days, but it was happened only on March 29, 1941.
