Covers

Rolf Gohs was the main cover artist with 10 covers, of which one was old artwork edited by the editorial staff. Other cover artists were Hans Lindahl (8 covers), Paul Ryan & Tom Smith (6 covers), Felmang & Rudy Walk (1 cover), and Peter Friman (1 cover).

This year, the majority of the covers were colored by computer. Both Hans Lindahl and Paul Ryan produced line art covers for computer coloring; Lindahl coloring his own covers and Ryan cooperating with colorist Tom Smith. 15 covers were colored with computer, only the covers by Rolf Gohs and Felmang & Rudy Walk were painted.

2004 also saw two other cover experiments: Fantomen 7 had a double cover, of which the outer cover looked like the Phantom's mask. The eye holes in the mask were cut out, and the white parts that showed were from the background of an inside cover by Hans Lindahl. The cover of Fantomen 12 was a fold-out cover where the illustration became twice as big when folded out.

Starting with Fantomen 17, the cover design was changed. The logo became smaller in size, and a skull-shaped smoke was placed within the letter "o" in Fantomen. A vertical purple & black-striped bar was placed along the left side of the cover. An hourglass with a countdown of roman numerals was placed in the top right corner of the cover. All this coincided with the "Year 1" storyline. On the first inside cover, a new painting by Hans Lindahl was placed and used as background for a recap and introduction to the "Year 1" stories.
