Bangalla is the country where the Phantom lives. It was formerly known as Bengali (and in Sweden, Norway and Finland that name is still in use), though that was changed in the 1970s in the newspaper version.

Government and politics

Bangalla is a former Commonwealth country and that became independent in the 1960s.

After the independence, general elections were held and dr. Lamanda Luaga was elected first president of Bangalla. His opponent, General Bababu, opposed the election results and a civil war broke out. Bababu seized power briefly until the civil war was over and president Luaga was reinstated.

In the newspaper version written by Lee Falk, Lamanda Luaga has always been president of Bangalla, but comic creators such as Team Fantomen has labored with other candidates rising to power and becoming president.

In current Team Fantomen stories, Sandal Singh (a female Singh pirate) is president of Bangalla.

The juridical system seem to originally have been copied from the British, since the judges are wearing whigs and hanging is used as a capital punishment.1

Death penalty has been put on crimes, such as taking drugs into the country2 and may also be imposed on possesion of drugs.3 Attempts to kill the president has also been made a crime that may result in death penalty.1

The president is the supreme commander of all the army forces1 and has the power to momentarily suspend at least some laws.4

Geography

The Capital is Mawitaan - in Scandinavia the original name Morristown have been kept. Other cities include Bengalitown, Sanloi, and Spyglass.

Bangalla's neighbors are Ivory-Lana, Tarashima, and Rhodia.
