Aftenposten is a Norwegian newspaper that published "The Phantom" daily strip. It was the first Norwegian publication to publish "The Phantom".

History

Aftenposten (Norwegian for "The Evening Post") was founded in 1860. It is published in two editions; the morning edition is published nationwide seven days a week, and the evening edition is published locally around Oslo and is as of 2009 published three days a week. The Phantom comic strip has usually been published in the evening edition.

A-magasinet

Promotion for the upcoming Phantom comic strip; from A-magasinet #46/1939 (November 18, 1939).

"The Phantom" first appeared in Aftenposten's Saturday supplement A-magasinet on November 25, 1939. An announcement introducing the strip had been published the previous week.

The first Phantom comic strip; from A-magasinet #47/1939 (November 25, 1939).

The first story was "The League of Lost Men", published in color. It started only six months after it was first published in the US. Other Sunday strip stories followed.

Due to World War II and shortage of paper, A-magasinet was cancelled and the Phantom strip was moved into the regular Aftenposten in 1942.

Edited strips

When the Phantom first appeared in A-magasinet, there was very little editing of the Sunday strips. Later on however, the strips were edited with all speech bubbles removed and the text printed below the panels. This practice was kept until 1980.

Sala and Diana

The last story published in A-magasinet was "The Return of the Sky Band", where the Phantom meets the pirate Sala once again. The previous stories featuring Sala had not been published in A-magasinet (since they were daily stories), and no stories with Diana Palmer had been published in A-magasinet either. When the Sky Band story was abruptly ended, the Norwegian readers were still under the impression that Sala and the Phantom may have romantic feelings for each other. The next published story, "The Game of Alvar", was published as a daily strip in the regular Aftenposten. It begins with Diana and the Phantom walking together, and was edited so Diana was given the name Sala Palmer, implying that she was the same girl as Sala the pirate from the Sky Band story – now the Phantom's girlfriend. The name Sala has been used for Diana Palmer in Norway ever since.

Classic stories

To celebrate 60 years of The Phantom strip in Aftenposten, a selection of classic stories were published starting May 3, 1999. The stories were "The Tiger Girl" (drawn by Wilson McCoy), "Princess Valerie" (drawn by Ray Moore), and "The Mysterious Ambassador" (drawn by Sy Barry). Unlike their previous apperances in Aftenposten, this time the strips were not edited with speech bubbles removed.
