Plot synopsis
Rex and Tom-Tom ask the Phantom to read something from the chronicles. The Phantom read about something that happened to his father in 1936.
The 20th Phantom was on his way to the US to meet his fiancé Maude Thorne McPatrick. In Paris he intervened when a man was attacked by muggers. When police arrives the victim is dead and the Phantom is arrested. The court finds him guilty of murder and sentence him to serve a lifetime sentence at the Devil's Island. Along with other prisoners he is taken by boat to the island. At the island the prisoners are treated brutally by the guards. When his friend Juga is beaten up by the guards, the Phantom knocks down one of the guards. The Phantom is sentenced to 8 months in isolation. He is let out after six months for good behaviour.
The Phantom and his friend Juga start to plan their escape. They climb the prison wall and run into the swamp where there is a raft. The sun is scorching and the sea is filled with sharks. They finally reach land and get help in an Indian village. After many hardships they get to a large city. Juga decide to stay while the Phantom finds a ship that can take him to New York.
