Plot summary

Guran is tidying up in The Chronicle Room in The Skull Cave when he finds a biography of Kate Sommerset, and shows it to Diana.

Calling herself Lady Kate Somerset, she was born in England in 1848 as the tomboyish third child of vicar Reginald Sommerset. When she was eight years old in 1856, her father decided to move to Bengali with his family. The ship they were travelling on was attacked off the coast of Bengali by Singh pirates and the gruesome pirate leader Scimitar Singh killed Kate's father. Out of nowhere appears The Phantom and the pirates leave, taking Kate and her father's golden crucifix with them. The Phantom promises to rescue her.

Kate spends the next four years on the pirate ship, cooking food for the pirates. One day when The Phantom appear on the pirate ship, Kate have her revenge on the Singh pirate when she stabs him in the back with her father's sharpened crucifix and set fire to his ship. Scimitar Singh is left presumed to be dead. The Phantom brings her with him to Bengali and the mission where her mother and siblings are staying.

Kate finds it difficult to adapt to wearing skirts and acting like a little lady. When her mother decides to send her back to England to a boarding house for young ladies, she runs away from home to become a sailor, dressed like a boy and calling herself Kay. Within two years she becomes first mate on the "Crimson Corsair", a pirate ship owned by captain Maddox. One day they attack a ship that turn out to be a Singh ship belonging to Scimitar Singh. The gruesome pirate Singh and Kate has a swordfight and she ultimately stab him with her father's golden crucifix, sharpened like a dagger. Badly bleeding herself, The Phantom tends to her wounds and as a token of gratitude The Phantom is allowed to leave the "Crimson Corsair" unharmed. With captain Maddox dead, Kate is now "Crimson Corsairs" captain, nicknamed "The Pirate Queen".
