Biography within Phantom comics
Roland was the most famous of the knights/ Paladins who served Emperor Charlemagne in the 8th century. In the year 778 after liberating a great deal of Spain, Charlemagne was retreating through the Pyrenees with Roland bringing up the rear-guard. Roland and his 20 thousand men were betrayed and attacked by 400 thousand Saracens. Despite repeated requests of his friend Oliver, Roland refused to blow his oliphant horn which would have summoned Charlemagne. To keep the emperor safe he decided to take a stand at the Roncevalles pass and fought till only 60 men remained and blew the horn only when his friend Oliver also died. He blew so hard that the horn and a vein in his neck broke and he died in the battlefield. His legendary sword Durandal was presented to Count Henri de Cambrai by Charlemagne.
